Traditional Vs Digital Art

Why do I need traditional art in todays world? The world today is becoming more and more digital. Traditional art materials are now obsolete and will be phased out, especially among the younger generation. So, why should I be learn about traditional art or even encourage my children into traditional art forms?

I would be lying to myself if I did not accept the fact that this thought comes to my mind a lot more these days!

With AI and generative media progressing at an exponential pace, every artist cant help, but wonder where things stand these days. Now, let me make my case and try to convince you that traditional art is all the more important now more than ever before!

Foundation

At the most granular level, traditional art is the output of our innate nature to express ourselves and takes us back to our deepest roots. The sheer human need to create comes out in the form of art. It is the most basic foundation of our part, present and I hope for the sake of humanity, our future as well.

Traditional art forms teach us the value of rules, while encouraging one to break them with respect! Think of traditional art forms as your ABC, you do re mi or sa re ga ma, without which neither can you talk nor sing! Traditional art form will be the clear the difference between a great artist, and a fantastic artist!

One has to learn, relearn and unlearn to navigate a world without undo, redo and copy/paste. That to me is priceless experience!

Controlled Freedom

While a lot of people think traditional art is very tight, restrictive and irrelevant, this could not be any farther from reality. Traditional art while it teaches you to be precise, meticulous and sometimes can feel overly imposing, it just as much gives you the freedom to explore the unknown and express oneself in their own unique way! Traditional art, in my opinion will always hold its worth.

Sensual Delicacy

Digital art will never get close to the sensory pleasure of traditional art. Imagine holding a freshly varnished oil portrait in your hands. The sheer joy of stretching a canvas to a frame or gifting someone a hand painted landscape! In my opinion, a beautiful piece of art will become a part of the family heirloom worth enough to be passed on and enjoyed by generations to come. As the world become more and more digital and everything moving to the cloud, any piece of art that can be enjoyed complete with all the five human senses will always be worth it and in my opinion the best thing that humanity has to offer.

Do you agree?

  • Yes

  • No

  • Maybe, you never know these days.
